The reasons aren't mysterious. LLMs apply different evaluation criteria than Google. Google ranks on: domain authority, backlinks, user engagement, keyword matching. LLMs evaluate on: specificity, authority demonstration, structural clarity, unique value, expertise signals.

When the model is answering a user question about data governance, it has hundreds of similar generic articles to choose from. Why cite this one? There's nothing specific enough to cite.

How to diagnose lack of specificity:

Read your article. Count how many claims would also appear in competitors' articles. If 80%+ would appear elsewhere, your content is generic. If 30%+ are unique to you (original data, specific examples, unique analysis), you're specific.

Ask: "Could I cite this?" If you can't imagine using this content as a citation anchor, it's probably too generic.

  1. Add data: every major claim needs support. Specific numbers, specific examples, specific cases.
  2. Identify mechanisms: explain why things work, not just that they work.

This signals expertise: named author with credentials, quantified experience, externally cited data, specific examples from practice, pattern observation.

Check:

  • Does the article have a named author with credentials?
  • How many external sources are cited? (target: 4-8 for authority articles)
  • Does the article cite specific data sources? Can you verify them?
  • Does the article include examples that suggest firsthand experience?

Can you outline the article in 2-3 minutes? If not, structure is unclear. Do headings logically subdivide the topic? Can you skip sections and still understand the article? If not, structure is weak.

Use a heading hierarchy checker (online tools exist). Inconsistent hierarchy is an objective failing.

This is pure commodity knowledge. Every ML article in the world contains these ideas. If the model is choosing between this and 50 other articles saying the same thing, why cite yours?

How to diagnose weak entity association:

  1. Who wrote your articles? Are they the same person or different people each time?
  2. Do the bylines include credentials? Just a name or name + title + experience?
  3. Do you publish consistently from the same author on the same topic?
  4. Could someone recognize an author from your articles and know what they're expert in?

If you have 10 articles from 8 different authors with generic bylines, entity association is very weak.

This is substantial work, which is why you should prioritize which articles to rewrite. Focus on:

  • Articles on your highest-priority topics
  • Articles that are closest to fixable (minor problems vs. major structural issues)
  • Articles you expect to be relevant for 2+ years
